This is a dream come true –Elul has opened the first Beit Midrash to train storytellers in the art of adapting and performing Jewish stories from the Sages for Israeli children and their parents. Inundated by Disney-type characters and stories, our children need to meet the characters from the Bible, the Talmud and the Chassidic, period who embody more than two thousand years of Jewish wisdom – our stories, told through modern, pluralistic eyes! The first 23 participants that have enrolled in the course will bring back to life these characters and their stories in settings such as community centers, shopping centers and during activities around the festivals. Approaching the end of their year of training, the Talmudic storytellers have already started performing, combining theatre skills and traditional stories. Close to 100 children and their parents attended a successful family activity in the northern town of Beit Shean. The performance “Rain” introduced the Talmudic character of Nakdimon Ben Gurion and the pilgrimage to Jerusalem. The performance was followed by storytelling and crafts.
